    3. WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT LOOKING OR WATCHFULNESS?
      1. There are 22 Greek words that have "look" in their translation, or phrase.
      2. One of these is the verb "BLEP0" ( ), which primarily means: "To have sight, to see, then, observe, discern, perceive, frequently implying special contemplation"…"is rendered by the verb to look in Luke 9:62. "looking (back); …" (VINE’S EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY OF NEW TESTAMENT WORDS, Page 695).
      3. Let go to the Bible and see why we should be vigilant and taking a careful look at things concerning us:

  2. DISCUSSION:

    1. LOOK BACKWARD:
      1. To see if there are unforgiven sins. Sins should never be forgotten until they are forgiven. Why?

        2. Jeremiah 17:1 = "The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the tablet of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars;"

      2. To view with grateful recollection for:
        1. Blessings and benefits. Psalms 103:2 (ASV)= "Bless Jehovah, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits."
        2. That which Christ gave for us. Luke 22:19 (ASV)= "And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, this is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me."

      I Peter 1:18-19 = "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:"

    2. LOOK FORWARD:
      1. In confidence.

        2. Romans 8:28 (ASV)= "We know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose."

        I Corinthians 15:58 = "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch, as ye know that your labor is not vain in the Lord."

      2. In hope:

      Romans 12:12 = "Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing steadfastly in prayer."

      Hebrews 11:1 = "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

      Titus 2:13 = "Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ."

    3. LOOK UPWARD:
      1. In praise and thanksgiving.

        2. Psalms 103:1(ASV) = "Bless Jehovah, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his Holy name."

        Ephesians 5:20 (ASV)= "Giving thanks always for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father."

      2. In supplication.

      Psalms 5:3 = "O Jehovah, in the morning shalt thou hear my voice; in the morning will I order my prayer unto thee, and will keep watch."

      Philippians 4:6 (ASV)= "In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God."

    4. LOOK DOWNWARD:
      1. In humility.

        2. Psalms 51:17 (KJV first part, last part ASV)= "A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."

        Isaiah 57:15 = "For thus saith the high and lofty one that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite."

        I Peter 5:5-6 = "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:"

      2. In caution: as to where we stand and where we walk.

      I Corinthians 10:12 = "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."

      Ephesians 4:1 = "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthily of the vocation wherewith ye were called."

    5. LOOK WITHIN:
      1. In rigid (thorough) examination.

        2. II Corinthians 13:5 (ASV first part last part KJV)= "Try your own selves, whether ye are in the faith; prove your own selves."

        I Corinthians 11:28-29 = "But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body."

      2. In an effort to correct the evil found.

      Ezekiel 18:21 = "But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die."

      II John 8 = "Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward."

    6. LOOK OUTWARD:
      1. In ceaseless vigilance.

        2. Matthew 26:41 = "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

        I Peter 5:8 = "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:"

      2. In loving helpfulness.

    Acts 16:9 = "And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, come over into Macedonia, and help us."

    Matthew 28:19-20 = "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."

  3. CONCLUSION: LOOK CHRIST-WARD =

    1. In childlike faith.

      2. John 3:14-15 = "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life."

    2. In admiration as He is our leader.

      3. Hebrews 12;1-2 = "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

    3. In humble obedience.

      4. Hebrews 5:8-9 = "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him:"

    4. For His coming.

II Peter 3:12-14 = "Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless."
